Meet A Local: Valerie Gordon of Valerie Confections
What started as a line of chocolate-dipped toffees has turned into a handful of brick & mortar locations scattered across the city of Los Angeles serving up gourmet chocolates, pastries, preserves and of course the delectably infamous Blum’s Coffee Crunch Cake. Valerie Gordon of Valerie Confections is one of those deeply passionate people who just loves what they do. In her case, it’s satisfying the sweet tooth of Angelenos, one petits fours at a time.
What brought on your love for sweets?
Chocolates and desserts have always provided me a sense of comfort and joy, I can't recall when my love began.
Out of all the incredible recipes from your book "Sweet," which is your favorite?
The Durango Cookie, it has a great balance of sweet, savory and smoke.
Now with three retail locations in Los Angeles, where do you spend most of your time?
My schedule changes based on the week and the various needs of each location, but I try to spend least one full day per week at each location.
What's your favorite local artisanal treat?
The Mont Blanc Cookie at Susina Bakery, it is a tiny, chewy almond cookie with a shortbread base half-dipped in chocolate. Darn good.
What ingredient in our May box would you most be inclined to try and why?
The Smoky Sherry-Onion Compote, I suspect it has that magical combination of sweet, savory and smoke that I so enjoy.
